The EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapeutic approach developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s. Its main goal is to help the brain process difficult or traumatic memories that, for various reasons, were not adequately worked through at the time they occurred. These experiences can remain “active” in the nervous system, influencing emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in the present.

The technique uses bilateral stimuli—such as eye movements, alternating sounds, or tactile cues—while the person briefly focuses on an upsetting memory. This process facilitates the so‑called adaptive reprocessing of information, allowing the memory to integrate in a healthier way, with a reduction of the associated emotional suffering.

EMDR is widely used in the treatment of post‑traumatic stress disorder, but its benefits extend beyond that. Studies show efficacy in anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, complicated grief, and other situations marked by difficult experiences. The goal is not to erase memories but to transform them, reducing the intensity of feelings such as fear, guilt, or anguish.

EMDR therapy follows a structured eight‑phase protocol. Initially, the therapist conducts a detailed assessment and works with the patient on emotional stabilization strategies. Next, target memories to be worked on are identified. During reprocessing, bilateral stimuli are applied, helping the brain reorganize the information. The process also includes reinforcing positive beliefs and carefully closing each session to ensure emotional safety.

One of the most common questions concerns the possibility of doing EMDR online. Today, the technique can be safely applied in remote sessions using platforms specifically designed for therapists. In these platforms, bilateral stimuli can be visual or auditory, maintaining the method’s effectiveness. An example is the platform developed by the British company bilateralbase.com, used by qualified professionals in the approach.

EMDR is one of the most studied approaches in the trauma field, with extensive scientific production in the United States and Europe. International organizations also recognize its effectiveness: the World Health Organization recommends EMDR as a first‑line treatment for post‑traumatic stress disorder in children, adolescents, and adults.

If you are interested in learning more or want to find out if this approach might be suitable for you, talking to a qualified professional is the first step. Each therapeutic process is unique, and caring for emotional health can open important pathways to a life with more balance and well‑being.
