Why is following so much bad news making you feel bad?

Why is following so much bad news making you feel bad?

You want to stay well informed. But without realizing it, you keep going deeper, news after news that isn't good for you: another protest in Europe, another disease case, another crisis somewhere in the world. And the result isn't feeling safer. It's feeling worse.

Find out why this is hurting you

A study in the scientific journal Health Communication, conducted with 1,100 adults in the US, arrived at a direct number: those who consume news intensely are almost 10 times more likely to report mental distress than those who consume little, and exactly 10 times more likely to report physical symptoms, such as insomnia and constant fatigue. Gallup's emotional health report, conducted in 2026 with data from 97 countries, found the same pattern: those who spend 2 hours or more per day on social media report more anger, loneliness, and worry than those who use it moderately.

This happens because content that provokes fear or outrage holds attention more than neutral content. Platforms profit from the time you spend on them, so the algorithm pushes exactly this type of news to the top of the feed. It's not because the world suddenly got worse. It's because this is what keeps you scrolling.

The good news

The break works, and it doesn't have to be radical. In a study of nearly 1,800 college students in the US, one week without Facebook was enough to measurably reduce symptoms of depression, without anyone needing to look for news elsewhere to compensate.

What helps in everyday life
- Setting fixed times to check the news, instead of checking all day without noticing.
- Replacing "the more I know, the safer I feel" with "what, from this information, can I actually do about it".
- Notice if your mood gets worse after scrolling the feed. It's a sign, not a coincidence.
- Seek sources that inform without exploiting fear, instead of stopping keeping informed altogether.

Feeling insecure about what happens in the world is human, especially living far from home and following news from more than one country at the same time. But when this feeling starts to dominate your day, it's worth talking about it with someone. At PsyNoord, we help you understand what, within all of this, is yours to take care of, and what isn't.
